We’re excited to share that CDT PhD candidates Ellie Colegate (2021) and Hannah Heilbuth (2022) have been collaborating with the newly established Law and Technology Research Centre (LTRC) on an upcoming event exploring one of today’s key digital policy challenges, age assurance.
The event, “Age Assurance: Addressing Non-compliance, Circumvention, and Unintended Consequences,” is organised in partnership with Privacy Laws & Business – the same organisation Ellie and Hannah collaborated with for the London event ‘What’s Right for Children and Their Data?’ in March 2025.
This session will bring together academics and industry experts to unpack how the Online Safety Act 2023 is shaping new standards for age assurance online. Discussions will cover the types of technology on offer and in use by services, alongside emerging evidence of user responses, including non-compliance and circumvention, exploring both the intended and unintended consequences of this new regulatory landscape.
When: 4th November 2025, 12:30-14:00 (in person for networking and refreshments)
Where: Join online (in-person attendance also available)
Panellists:
~Dr Mando Rachovitsa (University of Nottingham)
~ Ellie Colegate (University of Nottingham)
~ Dr Claire Bessant (Northumbria Law School)
~ Andy Lulham (COO, Verifymy)
~ Julie Dawson (Chief Policy & Regulatory Officer, Yoti)
There will be a strong CDT presence – Ellie will be speaking on the panel and Hannah will be chairing. Both have been busy behind the scenes organising the event with Dr Oliver Butler from the School of Law.
