Media Gifting

The Media gifting project will explore the underlying relationship between the physical and digital when gifting: Is the physical a wrapping for a digital gift? Is the digital a way of enhancing the experience of a physical gift? How do we enhance the experience of unwrapping and enjoying these kinds of gifts and appropriate ways of providing feedback to the giver? How can we support people in crafting and sharing hybrid media gifts?

The BBC is partnering with us in developing a deep understanding of gifting practices and desires in relation to their media content. Together we will explore new forms of gifting practice that may add value to BBC content by combining them with physical artefacts.

Examples could include:

  • Associating playlists of content with consumable gift items
  • Exploring notions of physical wrappings for digital gifts
  • Exploring notions of broadcasting content through objects
  • Providing people with tools to craft their own physical artefacts, associate them with BBC content and then share them with others

Media Gifting will build on existing Horizon technologies such as Artcodes, parallel research on ephemeral media and gifting, and work in the FAST project on adaptive musical playlists.
