Gendernet progress update: Insights and Feedback from Interviews

We are now well into the Gendernet project and have already interviewed 30 staff members and students across the University of Nottingham. We are pleased to announce that the project has now been extended until July 2025.

Early findings from the interviews were presented in the Socio-legal Studies Annual Conference 2025 Liverpool April 2025.

Our participants feedback about the self-reflecting aspect of being interviewed.

“I found it interesting as it made me think about my own experiences online and what can be done to improve the experiences of people online overall”.

“Feels good to know that 1. My experiences will contribute to a change for the better in some way; and 2. To be able to share them as opposed to bottling them up – it was a good, safe space to share my experiences”

“I think I realised I had more to say on the topic than expected and it prompted me to consciously think about my experiences and behaviours”.

We are still looking for a range of people to interview, so please get in touch if you are interested in supporting our explorations into gendered exclusion in digital online spheres by completing this form.

Additionally, we have created an online survey to gather views and experiences from online social media users.

The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and involves answering a series of questions – a mixture of tick box and free text responses – relating to:

  • Demographics such as age and country of origin, residence and socio-economic background.
  • Ways of using and interacting on social media.
  • Experiences of being the witness or the target of online misogyny, sexism and antifeminism.
  • The use of AI in social media content and moderation.
  • Cultural differences in expressing online misogyny, sexism and antifeminism.
  • Opinions of current regulatory frameworks and ways of improving them to enable equal online participation.
  • Ideas about creating short videos to discuss these topics.
