hoRRIzon 3.0 – Storytelling and Responsible Innovation workshops

The hoRRIzon 3.0 legacy and impact project has been exploring what “Responsible Research and Innovation” (RRI) means to different people and how researchers can carry out research in a responsible way, especially with digital and digital/physical technologies.

Based on the insights and findings from previous iterations of hoRRIzon (1.0 & 2.0) and Trustworthy Autonomous Systems activities in this area, we are now organising storytelling workshops to further support the training of the next generation of designers and researchers.

We plan to invite researchers from different career stages (PhD students, early career, and mid and senior researchers) to participate in storytelling workshops. Participants will be asked to read a fictitious story followed by discussions on what RRI might mean or involve, in the context of the story.

We conducted our first workshop in January 2024, and we are delighted with the participants’ comments:

There were discussion points that I wouldn’t have thought of myself, so I can take these forward and apply them to my own research if appropriate”.

I found the workshop very thought-provoking, and it was useful to bounce ideas off each other. The storytelling aspect was useful for thinking about how research may be received differently by different groups of people, and for understanding how I can write about my research in a way that considers RRI”.

One output from the workshops will be the development of an educational toolkit, containing resources for educators and trainers. The toolkit will include provocations, self-reflective activities, scenarios, and examples of lesson plans. The toolkit will support researchers who are traditionally systems-focused, to explore the social implications of emerging technologies and create trust in new technologies. We hope that it will also influence how educators teach about responsibility and support the industry and research community to develop human-centred skillsets.
