Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Sub-committee on Online Harms and Disinformation

Horizon’s Research Fellow, Dr Jiahong Chen was invited by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Sub-Committee to participate in an online discussion about Online Harms and Disinformation, in particular data ethics and how data and algorithms are used.

Among other questions, the Committee asked for evidence regarding how much people understand and care about data collection online, and Dr Chen referred to empirical findings from Horizon projects such as UnBias and ReEnTrust . In a different question regarding the government’s Secure by Design initiative, Dr. Chen pointed out the need to have regard to the human factors in cybersecurity regulation as highlighted in a recent Horizon response to the DCMS call for views.
